Crossroads Coaching

Life after cancer doesn’t come with a roadmap – That’s where The Crossroads Coaching comes in

Who are you and what do you do?

I’m Sue Brown, founder of The Crossroads Coaching, based at the Creative & Digital Hub in Worthing as a flexible member.

I support people navigating life after cancer treatment: helping them rebuild confidence, energy, and direction once the medical side of things ends and real life begins again.

Alongside coaching, I also create content that shines a light on the often-unseen reality of unpaid caring and caregiving through cancer.

What inspired you to start Crossroads Coaching?

I started the business in 2022 after many years working in the community and voluntary sector.

What I kept seeing was a gap; there’s a lot of support during diagnosis and treatment, but far less when it’s all over. And that’s often when people feel most lost.

You’re expected to feel grateful, relieved, and ready to move on… but in reality, your confidence, sense of self and energy don’t always catch up as quickly.

That ‘in-between’ space is where I work.

What makes your approach different?

My work focuses on what happens next, the part nobody really prepares you for.

I’m a coach rather than a counsellor, so my approach is practical and forward-looking. It’s about helping people make changes that actually stick and feel meaningful in their everyday lives.

I also bring humour into the process where it helps. Cancer is serious enough without cancer is serious enough without us having to be solemn all the time.

What does a typical client journey look like?

Every client is different, but a lot of people come to me feeling stuck, unsure, or disconnected from who they were before.

We work together to make sense of that, rebuild confidence, and create a version of the future that feels like theirs again – not something they feel they should be doing. It’s about small, realistic steps that lead to lasting change.

Do you collaborate with others?

Yes, and I’m always open to more collaboration.

I currently work with Sarah Hurst, who supports people during cancer treatment, and together we’re launching a podcast called Your Way Now. The podcast shares expert insights, practical tips, and real conversations to help people support themselves beyond medical treatment.

My work also naturally overlaps with wellbeing, HR, training, and community-focused organisations, especially anyone supporting people through major life changes.

What drives you?

My ‘why’ is simple: people deserve support for the part nobody talks about.

After treatment, so many people are left thinking, ‘I should be fine now… so why don’t I feel fine?’ I help them answer that question, rebuild their confidence, and move forward in a way that feels right for them.

I’m also driven by a strong belief that unpaid carers deserve visibility, validation, and support – not just gratitude.

What’s been your most memorable moment?

One of the more unusual moments actually came from a previous role: I stood inside a giant inflatable boob to raise awareness of early breast cancer signs… and I’ve also put googly eyes on a speculum to bring a bit of humour to the serious topic of cervical screening.

Why did you choose Freedom Works?

I’ve been based at Freedom Works since I started my business. I also used to work for Community Works, who were a member until the middle of 2025 – so Freedom Works has been a significant part of my working life for the last four years!

I wanted a space that felt professional but still welcoming and energising. Working from home can be quite isolating, so having somewhere to go where you can focus, meet people, and feel part of a community makes a huge difference.

What’s next for Crossroads Coaching?

The launch of Your Way Now podcast is a big one; it’s been such a fun project to bring together, with some really fascinating guests involved.

I’m also developing a six-session group coaching programme specifically for unpaid carers of someone with a cancer diagnosis. It will focus on key moments they face, with support around mindset, energy, reflection, and finding a new direction.

There’s a lot more to come, and I’m really excited about what’s ahead.
