The Business & IP Centre (BIPC) Brighton & Hove is extending its small business support services across Sussex, as part of the British Library’s national rollout of its successful library-based enterprise centres.

Thanks to new funding from the British Library, BIPC Brighton & Hove will equip selected Sussex libraries with business resources and support services by 2023. This includes virtual access to business information services already available at Crawley Library, building on the success of the Brighton & Hove centre since its launch.

Together, these centres will form the new BIPC Sussex network – a fantastic free resource for start-ups, entrepreneurs and small businesses.

By the end of 2021, additional Sussex libraries will be offering tailored support to help businesses start and scale. While each BIPC location will feature a core suite of resources – including market research databases, company information, and intellectual property guidance – the true value lies in bespoke local programming. This includes workshops, one-to-one advice sessions, and events delivered in partnership with local business leaders, entrepreneurs, and community organisations.

Importantly, BIPCs are making business ownership more inclusive. Across the UK, over half of BIPC users are women, and a third are from under-represented ethnic backgrounds – more than triple the national average. This reflects the accessibility and community-driven ethos of the BIPC model.

In a recent survey, 23% of BIPC users said the service helped them gain the confidence and resilience needed to navigate their businesses through the challenges of the pandemic.

Making enterprise more accessible for everyone

Councillor Steph Powell, Co-Chair of the Tourism, Equalities, Communities & Culture Committee, said:

Despite launching during lockdowns and restrictions, BIPC Brighton & Hove has already proven its value to small businesses in the city. Public libraries play a vital role in making the path to entrepreneurship accessible for all.”

We’re proud to be working with the British Library to expand this model across Sussex.”
